Malwarebytes Unable To Connect The Service [Solved]

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or MBAM is a free tool that you can download from the internet. This helps to deal with malicious apps or unwanted threats. Although the entire version of Malwarebytes is not free, you can download the free trial version that is sufficient enough to protect your computer from unwanted threats.

But, some users reported that the Malwarebytes version starts to malfunction. When they click on the icon, the circle keeps rotating continually and displays the error message “Unable to Start. Unable to connect the Service”.

This error indicates that the Malwarebytes is unable to connect the service and you need to fix this immediately. Here, we are going to provide easy hacks through which you can get rid of this annoying issue.

How to Fix if Malwarebytes Unable to Start the Service?

There are several ways to troubleshoot this problem. You can have a look at the solutions stated below:

Fix 1: Check the Malwarebytes Service

Malwarebytes runs using the service that it installs to the system. The error notification ‘Malwarebytes unable to connect the service’ implies that there are some problems in the communication pathway between the software and service.

Hence, if the service is turned off, or if it has any problems, then you can solve that by following the steps mentioned below:

  1. First and foremost, launch the Run command box by pressing the R and Windows key simultaneously from the keyboard.
  2. Then, type “services.msc” in the command box and click on the OK button to open the list of services. Afterward, open the first result by running it with admin privilege.
  3. Now, search for the Malwarebytes service by scrolling down the list. Once you get that, right-click on it and choose the ‘Properties’ option from the list.
  4. Next, go to the Startup category. If you see any other settings are enabled there, then change it to Automatic.
  5. If you see that the service is disabled, then enable it by clicking on the Start button. Once it enables, you will see that the status has changed to ‘Running’.

Now, you can close the window and try to start Malwarebytes once again to check whether the error is resolved.

Fix 2: Reinstall Malwarebytes from Scratch

According to some users they have solved this error permanently by reinstalling the Malwarebytes.

But, to perform the reinstallation process, you will have to find out the Activation key and ID. You can locate the Activation key and ID easily from the download page. Here are the steps you can follow to perform the entire process:

Step 1:

In the beginning, go to the Start menu and type “regedit” in the search bar. Go to the below location to find out the Activation key and ID depending on the architecture of the computer.

  • Location for Windows x86 32-Bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
  • Location for Windows x64 64-Bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node \Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

After knowing the Activation key and ID, you can proceed further. Follow the subsequent steps to use the Premium version of Malwarebytes after the uninstallation.

Step 2:

First, launch MBAM and go to the My Account section. Then, tap on the Deactivate button. Next, go to Settings and then navigate to the Advanced Settings tab from the left pane of the screen. Now, untick the ‘Enable self-protection module’ box.

Step 3:

After that, close the program and then visit the official website of Malwarebyte and search for the ‘mbam-clean.exe’ tool. Once you are able to locate the tool, download that on your computer.

Once the downloading process completes, disable the antivirus temporarily and close all the programs that are running in the background of the system.

Step 4:

Now, go to the location where you have stored the ‘mbam-clean.exe’ tool. Run this by following the on-screen guidance. When asked to restart the computer, click on the Restart button.

Afterward, download the latest version of Malwarebytes from their official website. Install it by performing the on-screen prompts. Next, uncheck the Trial box.

Step 5:

Now, wait for a few seconds and once the program opens, tap on the Activation button. Thereafter, enter the Activation key and ID in the dialog box. As a result, it will activate the license automatically.

Note: If you are not using Malwarebytes Pro or Premium version, then you can repeat the steps.

After applying the above steps, if you see that the problem still reappears, you can move on to the further ways described below.

Fix 3: Uninstall MBAM in Safe Mode

If you are unable to uninstall the MBAM during normal startup, you can try to restart the system in Safe Mode. To do this, you can perform the steps as follows:

  • First of all, go to the Start menu and type “msconfig” in the search bar. Then, go to the Boot tab.
  • Tick the ‘Safe Boot’ box and tap on the Radio button near the Minimal option. Tap on the OK button to confirm that you want to restart the system.
  • Once the system restarts in Safe Mode, go to the Start menu and click on the Settings (gear-shaped) button.
  • Navigate to the Apps category and then search for the MBAM from the list of installed applications. Once you get that, right-click on it and choose ‘Uninstall’.
  • Afterward, open ‘msconfig’ once again and then disable the Safe Boot option.
  • Lastly, you have to reinstall MBAM. To do that, visit the official website of Malwarebytes and download the latest version of MBAM.

These steps will be enough to fix the problem permanently and will also eliminate any subsequent glitches.
